Learning Outcomes

Tabla, Tala and Theka

· Understanding of the physical and acoustic structure of the Tabla, the percussion instrument used in concerts

· Understanding of the language of the Tabla and the various Bols (the sounds produced by the Tabla, using its two parts, the Daanya and the Baanya).

· Understanding of the structure of various Talas constructed using different number of beats in the Aavartan (the rhythmic cycle), and the use of hand movements.

· Understand the concept of Theka, as used for accompaniment.

The Khayal form

· Understanding of the structure of a Khayal concert and its different elements

· Understanding of the aesthetic significance of the different forms of ornamentation and embellishments used by a vocal performer to present a Raga

· Understanding of how the artist expands on a basic composition, and the tools for improvisation and progression.

·Ability to follow and appreciate a Khayal performance

Tempo – Vilambit (slow), Madhya (medium) and Drut (fast)

· Understanding the continuous spectrum of tempos from the slowest to the fastest, and their appropriate use in the compositions.
